Window Blinds and Window Shutters-Similarities and Differences
Window blinds and window shutters are both commonly used window coverings. Both allow the control and reduction of the amount of heat, sunlight and noise entering a room through its windows. They provide privacy and help keep a room cooler, while offering protection from rain and weather. They also help prevent pests and vermin from entering the house through the windows. Although
window shutters and window blinds have many common functions, they differ from each other in some aspects.
Window blinds are made up of multiple strips that are called slats. Slats are called louvers in window shutters. Window blinds can either be horizontal blinds or vertical blinds. Horizontal window blinds, also called venetian blinds, have slats arranged one on top of another, whereas in vertical blinds, slats are arranged side by side. Window blinds can be rolled up and down to control the level of light entering a room and may be pulled down completely to block all outside light and provide maximum privacy. Window blinds are usually controlled using cords, however cordless and remote controlled varieties are also available.
Window shutters come in exterior and interior varieties and don't have any cords. They are usually custom made to suit specific windows, unlike window blinds which generally come in standard sizes. This is because window shutters won't fit a window unless they are properly sized for it. Window shutters generally last longer than window blinds and are more costly compared to them.
Well known window blind manufacturers include
