Reducing Home Energy Costs
There are many ways to cut energy costs at home. Some are simple and obvious, but often overlooked like turning off the television and computer when nobody is around and turning off lights when not needed. Another way is to open the freezer and refrigerator doors for as few times and as short a duration as possible. Other simple methods include drying clothes outside rather than using a clothes dryer, unplugging unused appliances, and using fluorescent lamps and lower wattage bulbs for lighting.
Home heating and cooling costs comprise a large chunk of energy costs. To reduce them, you need to make sure that your home is energy efficient, not allowing air to escape through cracks and gaps and retaining maximum heat or cold as needed, making it less work for the heating or air conditioning system to bring a room to the required temperature. Replace your windows with energy efficient windows, as normal windows leak large amounts of air and heat outside leading to higher energy costs. Other ways to reduce heating and cooling costs include insulating your home thoroughly and sealing various small cracks or openings in its ducts and the attic. You should also buy a programmable thermostat, which helps conserve energy by turning on the air conditioning or heating only at times when it is really needed and turning it off when unneeded.
Care also needs to be taken when new appliances and electronics are purchased. When buying them, look for the energy star certification, as these devices will help you conserve energy. You should also consider replacing older energy inefficient electronics and appliances with newer energy efficient ones.
