Keep Your Radiators In Working Order
While we all expect just to come home, switch on the central heating and it will just work, this is not always the case. There can be several reasons why radiators do not emit heat or at least do not give out as much heat as they should. However, how can you fix the problem?
For a start you should bleed your
radiators every few months or so. This is a very straightforward process and doesn’t require much skill. You simple take the vent key and unscrew the air vent at the top of the radiator. If there is any trapped air then it will give off a whistling or screeching sound and then some water will squirt out once the air has been released. Once the water appears simple tighten the air vent again and that in itself should be enough to keep your radiators working at maximum efficiency. However, some other methods can ensure this as well.
Look for any signs of rust or corrosion on your radiators and vents. Even the slightest amount can prevent the system from working to its full capacity as it can lead to trapped air like we mentioned above. If the vent itself is blocked then you can easily buy a replacement part at most hardware stores for a very inexpensive price and this simple cost can have a major effect on how your system works as whole. Furthermore, always keep your eye out for leaky valves or any water on the carpet or tiles around the radiator. To fix this you usually only need to tighten the valve cap although, even if just one radiator is leaking it can have an effect on every one in the house and lead to reduced heat emissions and subsequent increase in the amount of energy your system uses.
