Intranets and Extranets
An intranet is a network that exists exclusively within an organization, which utilizes internet technologies such as web browsers and web servers to facilitate communication and
team collaboration within an organization and between geographically dispersed departments, various divisions and regional offices. With an intranet, access to all information and applications within an organization can be made available to a member or employee of the organization through a web browser on his desktop, quickly and inexpensively while protecting the information from unauthorized access. An intranet provides easy access to information, reduces time spent searching for information, as well as documentation and support costs. It also allows sharing of tools, information and skills.
Sometimes, an organization may wish to extend access to its intranet files, applications and resources to its business partners, suppliers and customers. In this case an extranet is required. An
extranet extends the intranet from one location to another across the internet to another intranet of a business partner. It is an extended intranet which isolates business communications from the internet through various security measures and encryption of data. An extranet provides a way for a business to provide external organizations with access to information relevant for them. It is a collaborative internet connection with other companies and business partners that provides the privacy and security of an intranet. It connects intranets of business partners, material suppliers, financial services and customers to an extranet by way of mutual agreement for exchange of information and online collaboration.
